Bhimbetka Rock Shelters

The largest prehistoric art site in India.


The Bhimbetka Rock Shelters located in Madhya, Pradesh India date back to 8000 B.C.E. It was only discovered in 1957 and contains 700 shelters which is the largest site of prehistoric art in India. This site displays the earliest forms of Indian civilization. There are drawings from many different prehistoric periods on the sandstone rock. The Late Paleolithic Period (Old Stone Age) contains representations of rhinoceroses and bears. The Mesolithic Period (Middle Stone Age) portrays human activities in addition to animals. The Chalcolithic Period (Early Bronze Age) displays agricultural concepts. There is also decorative art depicting religious motifs, which include tree gods and magical sky chariots. In 2003, Bhimbetka was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
