Hindi cinema is known for its expressive storytelling, emotional melodramas and lively dancing.




Bollywood is mainstream Hindi cinema that began in the 1930s. The word is a combination of the words “Bombay” which is now known as Mumbai, and “Hollywood.” The actors and actresses are the main attraction of the films, with numerous notable stars; there were Ashok Kumar and Devika Rani in the 1930s, Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand in the 1950s and 1960s, Rajesh Khanna in the 1970s, Amitabh Bachchan in the 1980s, and Shah Rukh Khan in the 1990s. Popular female stars included Madhubala in the 1950s, Mumtaz in the 1960s, Zeenat Aman in the 1970s, Hema Malini in the 1980s, and Madhuri Dixit and Kajol in the 1990s. Bollywood produces around 1,000 films annually in all of India’s major languages. There are three popular international audiences of the films in South Asia, the U.K. and the U.S. Bollywood films are known for their skillfully choreographed fight scenes, sensational song and dance sequences, emotional melodramas, and legendary heroes. Priyanka Chopra Jones is one of India’s highest paying actresses in and out of Bollywood.
