Chana masala, also known as chole masala, is a popular vegetarian dish with each region having its own variation. There is Pindi Chana Masala (Punjab), Amritsari Chana Masala (Punjab), Chole Masala (Northern region), South Indian Chana Masala (Souther region), and Maharashtrian Chana Masala. It originated in Northern India and is served at any occasion ranging from festivals, special occasions, Indian households, and street food. Chickpeas, containing protein and fiber, are the dish’s main component and have been featured in the Indian diet for thousands of years. Besides chickpeas, the other common ingredients are tomatoes, onions, garlic, ginger, oil, and a blend of spices such as cumin, coriander, turmeric, garam masala, and chili powder. Chana masala in other regions use additional ingredients such as coconut, mustard seeds, cinnamon, clove, and many more.
