A list of acclaimed Indian movies that were nominated for the Oscars over the years.


Mother India (1957)

Mother India (1957) is an epic drama and was the first Indian film to be nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category in 1958. The story is about a newly-wed couple who took out a loan to pay for their wedding ceremony, however, due to interest rates the couple’s finances take a turn for the worst and they are forced to give up three quarters of their crop. The plot follows the couple’s journey and the obstacles they face.


The House that Ananda Built (1969)

The House that Ananda Built (1969) was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short. The 20-minute film is about a successful businessman named Ananda in Nagpur, his beliefs, and his life with his children. His life begins before independence and ends 20 years after.


An Encounter with Faces (1978)

An Encounter with Faces (1978) was nominated for an Academy Award for Documentary Short Subject in 1979. The story follows the lives of children at an orphanage in Mumbai and is captured through their point of view.


Salaam Bombay! (1988)

Salaam Bombay! (1988) was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film in 1989. The film is about an 11-year-old boy who is sent to a circus to pay for the damage he did to his older brother’s motorbike. However, he ends up in the slums of Bombay. Along the way he encounters a drug dealer and a prostitute who he befriends while doing his best to earn money at a tea stall to repay his debt.


Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001)

Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001) was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. The story takes place in 1893 under British occupation. The Captain unexpectedly imposes a land tax that outrages citizens. A farmer gathers people together to face the Captain in a game of cricket that will decide whether or not the tax is repealed.


Little Terrorist (2004)

Little Terrorist (2004) was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film. The story follows a 10-year-old Muslim boy who unknowingly crosses the Indian border and befriends a Hindu Brahmin. Meanwhile, Indian soldiers search for the unknown “terrorist” that crossed the border.


White Tiger (2021)

White Tiger (2021) was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. It is a commentary on classism and casteism in India. The story is about an ambitious Indian driver for a rich family who strives to rise out of poverty and become a successful entrepreneur.


Writing with Fire (2021)

Writing with Fire (2021) was nominated for Best Documentary Feature. In a male-dominated news landscape, the story follows the journey of India’s only Dalit women-led newspaper as they shift from print to digital journalism using smartphones.
